Algarve Attractions and things to do in the Algarve

The Algarve is Portugal's most southerly province and is bordered by the Atlantic on two sides. It stretches for over 80 miles from the Spanish border westwards to Cape St Vincent. Many holidaymakers associate the Algarve with golf, golf and more golf but there’s a lot more going on. In fact most tourist never place foot on the greens and the only tee they’re interested in has an A on the end.

The Algarve is open for business throughout the year but the main season runs from April through to late October with tourist rushing for the lovely sandy beaches. The Algarve has a great selection of ‘Blue Flag’ beaches ranging from the long beach at Albufeira to small coves hidden along the rocky shoreline. The Algarve draws visitors from all age groups and the main resort of Albufeira can get rather noisy in July and August. The great thing about the Algarve is the wide choice of resorts on offer all catering for a different clientele so there’s bound to be one to suit your needs. Check out our Algarve holidays including all inclusive holidays on the Algarve plus our wide selection of Algarve cheap hotels.

Shopping

You can find genuine local souvenirs like mats made from rush or cornhusks in the villages of Almeijoafras and Monte Novo. Woven baskets, woodcarvings and some glazed terracotta ceramics are found in the town centre as well as local markets. Modelo Centre in Rua de Municipio is the main shopping complex. The Algarve Shopping Complex in Guia should be explored if one is looking to get branded shoes and clothes. The complex also has restaurants, cinema theatres and even a bowling alley.

Festivals

Every town and village in Portugal has a patron saint, whose saint's day is celebrated with gusto by the whole community. Most celebrations revolve around the local Saint or is based on the Catholic Church but there are other festivals which are great to visit. In Faro during May/June you’ll find an international music festival. The Festa de Sao Pedro (Saint Peter) is celebrated in Porto at the end of June with music dancing and processions. The Feira de Santa Iria in Faro is the town's largest traditional festa held in the middle of October. Lagos celebrates its connection with Portugal's maritime past with the Festival of the Discoveries with processions during late October/early November in period costume through the town's streets. Independence Day, a public holiday on December 1, is usually celebrated with fireworks and joyous parties throughout Portugal. More information can be sort at the local tourist office or from your hotels reception.

Head to the beach

The Algarve has some of the best beaches in the world, ranging from large popular beaches where numerous water sports are available, including windsurfing, scuba diving, fishing and boating, to small secluded beaches where visitors can just relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

The main square is a mix of enchanting old churches and bars, cafés and restaurants. Wander through the tunnel, past the bell tower and through the old castle to the fantastic Fisherman’s Beach. One of the most endearing aspects of Albufeira is it hotchpotch of styles, the result of a devastating earthquake during the 18th century. Consequently, a large amount of local landmarks now display a fusion of architectural styles combined with several centuries-old Moorish sights dotted around the old town. Admire the uniquely Portuguese Manueline-style St Sebastian’s Church, the 18th century St Anne’s Church and the restored Gothic-style Mercy Chapel. The belfry of the parish church is one of the town’s landmarks and not to be missed. The tower is topped with an eight-bell carillon and the stairwell stands an impressive 28 metres high. Visit The Tower of Medronheira which was built in the 1500s and was used to watch the seaward horizon for pirates and invaders, or hop off and admire the impressive statue of St Vincent which commemorates the famous missionary’s eventual martyrdom in Japan.
