Costa del Sol Attractions and things to do on the Costa del Sol

The Costa del Sol stretches for over 100 miles along the Mediterranean coast of Andalucia - the southern most province of Spain. The area has over 20 fine sandy beaches and several holiday resorts including Marbella and Torremolinos. With an average sea water temperature of 64ºF (18ºC) the Costa del Sol can be enjoyed throughout the year.


Torremolinos is the UK’s favourite resort and it has all the usual mixture of Bars, restaurants, discos and beach activities. Attractions are plentiful and include water parks, casinos, amusement parks and zoos. For those who like to spend time on the rides then a visit to the Parque de Attractions Tivoli will keep you happy. If you want to see some Spanish culture then a day trip to either Seville to see the Gothic and Moorish buildings or visit Ronda if you want to see a collection of Roman remains. Excursions to Cordoba and Granada are also possible as well as a trip to Gibraltar. Many tourists only know Malaga for its International airport but several actually stay in the city to visit the many galleries and museums. Many of the galleries have works by Pablo Picasso who was actually born there. If you can drag yourself off the beach there's a lot to see and do on the Costa del Sol.

Shopping

Puerto Banus houses a good number of shops that deal with eye-catching articles from Gucci to Louis Vuitton. The most frequented shop in Puerto Banus is the El Corte Ingles department store, where tourists can buy most of the things needed. Marina Banus is an indoor shopping complex where travellers can find many shops selling souvenirs, curios, antiques, household articles and many other valuable goods. Every Saturday street markets are held in Puerto Banus were tourists are advised to have perfected haggling.

Nightlife

There are many night time venues at Puerto Banus that present exhilarating nightlife to the travellers. Night spots here get active only after midnight and remains active till late night hours. Party animals can head to one of the several music bars, discotheques, piano bars and casinos to enjoy the twilight hours.

Head to the beach

The Costa del Sol offers several beaches ranging from pebbles to finer sand along with a range of water activities. The better beaches are around Marbella.

Aqualand Water Park Aqualand in Torremolinos is a world of water attractions for the whole family to enjoy, experiencing a mixture of water slides of all different shapes and sizes, from adrenaline rushes to moments of relax whilst watching the little ones enjoy themselves at their very own water playground, Children's Paradise, Aqualand has something for everyone. If you enjoy water! You’ll certainly enjoy Aqualand! The most popular slide is the Kamikaze considered to be the tallest waterslide in Europe. There is also the ‘Crazy cones’, a slide of more than 12 meters high, which passes through three cones on a carpet of water to end up in the pool. Among other attractions are the ‘Black Hole’, the ramps of the ‘Rapids’, the’ Crazy Race ‘, the curves of the ‘super Slalom ‘ and some calmer pools and Jacuzzis. For the younger guest there’s the Mini Park with its new interactive games is an area designed especially for children guaranteeing a paradise for kids and an easy day out for Mum and Dad. For those wanting a drier activity there are plenty of sunbathing areas snack bars restaurants and an 18-hole mini golf course. Aqualand Torremolinos is situated just 10 minutes from the centre of Torremolinos is the largest water park on the Costa del Sol. Sealife - Benalmadena Explore the mysteries of the Big Blue at the Sea Life Centre at Benalmadena Marina. This exciting and educational centre ensures you see the best close up views of many different denizens of the deep, including some of the most spectacular tropical species. You will even be able to feed and touch our friendly stingrays. Go deeper into the ocean and get a close up on the fascinating creatures that inhabit our seas, from beautiful starfish to baleful sharks. You’ll discover many amazing sea creatures on this fascinating tour around this unique interactive aquarium. Fun for the whole family is assured. Enjoy the hands-on experience of the interactive zone before going through the fascinating underwater tunnel, where you will be surrounded by incredible sharks and turtles. The green turtle is the largest of the hard-shelled species. Its natural habitat is in the warm waters of the Indian and Atlantic Oceans but it is also to be found in the Mediterranean. In this habitat we can also find the oriental small-clawed otter. This is the smallest of all otters, reaching a maximum length of 65cm. You will also have the chance to feed the cute stingrays – an experience you won’t forget in a long time. And then you can take a well-earned rest and recharge your batteries in our cafeteria, with its relaxing sea views and children’s play area or maybe try your hand at a round of Pirate mini-golf. To get any closer you may have to get wet!


Bioparc Fuengirola Park There’s a surprise around every corner at Bioparc Fuengirola, a zoo where animals are housed in realistic recreations of their natural habitat, thus favouring their development at all levels. Wander through a world in which you will find Malaysian temples and African baobab trees, where you will see species you’ve never seen before as well as some you know of but have never seen in all their glory. One of the latest attractions is a selection of tropical birds and mammals bringing visitors a little closer to the inhabitants of rainforests. Special landscaping for the exhibition includes a jungle clearing designed around two giant trees, a waterfall and a river, all surrounded by lush tropical vegetation. You will be able to move freely around this stunning rainforest and watch the animals in the complete absence of intrusive objects and instruments. Little ones will have their time of their lives at Bioparc. Not only will they have the opportunity of seeing their favourite animals in a magical setting but they will also find an area specially designed for children. Near one of our food areas we have designed a play area of more 500 square metres, where kids can play, have fun and let their imaginations run riot. The zoo has two restaurant areas with large terraces, one located near the park entrance and the other near the orang-utan enclosure. During the summer, the zoo is open until midnight, offering a rare opportunity to observe animal life at night.


Crocodile Park Snap up the chance to visit Crocodile Park, where you will find one of the largest collections of reptiles in Europe, with more than 2,000 specimens. You will learn more than you ever thought possible about these prehistoric animals that have survived through 200 million years of evolution. Located in a natural setting just outside of Torremolinos, Crocodile Park is home to more than 300 crocodiles, including Big Daddy, a Nile crocodile measuring more than four metres from head to tail, the largest of his kind in Europe. You’ll be able to get as close as you dare to these impressive giant reptiles and learn about some of their fascinating secrets, following the life cycle of crocodiles from birth until adulthood. Watch in awe as the crocodiles are fed, a frenzy that has to be seen to be believed. You might even get the chance to pick up a baby croc! From a distance of less than two metres, you'll be able to come close to giant crocodiles from different species from around the world. You will also meet many other species, including alligators, turtles, emus and rare birds such as the hooded merganser, the Indian peafowl and the mandarin duck.


Tablao Arte Flamenco - Flamenco show Flamenco is more than a dance form or music genre – it’s a way of life. To fully appreciate what it means to Spaniards, you have to attend a live show of Flamenco at the THB Torrequebrada Casino in Benalmadena so that you can feel the passion and appreciate the emotion of the raw and powerful music. Observe the facial expressions of the performers and see first-hand how they whip themselves into a frenetic frenzy that only dancing can release. The show unites a dance that blooms from a natural expression of feelings with the experiences of your own inner emotions. Flamenco is blood, passion, emotion, the raw language of the heart shouted out to awaken the heart and the soul of the world. Flamenco is life itself, the very centre of the universe. Flamenco is immortal. Such is the uniqueness of flamenco. Another feature is that not only do you get an exhilarating night of flamenco but also an evening of fine food, satisfying both mind and palate. You can choose the option of Show and Dinner and enjoy the buffet of the Hotel THB Torrequebrada Casino or choose Show and Drink (without dinner). Most tickets include free entrance to the Casino and free parking (to access to the casino you must be older than 18 years).


Cable car - Benalmadena > If you have a head for heights, then make sure you don’t miss this stunning cable car ride to the top of Mount Calamorro, enjoying stunning views over the coast and mountains of Benalmadena during the climb. This 3km cable car ride takes you to the top of the mountain, some 800 metres above sea level at an average speed of 5 metres per second. From there, you to climb effortlessly to the summit and one the most privileged viewpoints in the Costa del Sol in just a few minutes. The spectacular climb takes about 15 minutes in comfortable, modern cabins, carrying a maximum of up to four people, connecting Benalmadena Costa with the top of Mount Calamorro. You will pass over the zooming cars of the motorway, giving you a sense of perspective over the sheer scale of the climb. Once there, in addition to being able to admire the dramatic landscape, there are also a range of activities for visitors of all ages. From the summit there are unparalleled views of the Costa del Sol, the Sierra Nevada and on clear days, Gibraltar and the North African coast. You will also be able to enjoy exhibitions with birds of prey, including hawks, eagles, owls and vultures, as well as the possibility of trying adventure sports or of following almost 3km of signposted hiking trails that lead to more locations offering views before a relaxing ride back down to the marina.


Excursion to Gibraltar - Rock tour It looks and sounds like Britain but with the difference that it basks in the warm Spanish sunshine. Welcome to Gibraltar, the rocky outcrop that harks back to Britain’s imperial past, where the post boxes are red and the currency is sterling, and where the Union Jack flies over the hilltop Moorish castle. This is a city where you breathe the past in every nook and cranny. Choose between the different tours on offer and experience Gibraltar. During the Rock Tour, visit the Rock of Gibraltar, the symbol of the colony. Marvel at the miles-long network of tunnels, which was built during World War II when the city was of massive strategic importance. These were used to provide refuge for thousands of Gibraltarians during air raids. The Gibraltar with caves option heads to the top of the Rock of Gibraltar, which has more than 150 caves inside, including the 300 metre-high St Michael’s Cave, to marvel at the views of Africa and the Bay of Gibraltar and head into the caves. Meet the troops of wild Barbary macaques, the only population of such monkeys in Europe. Legend has it that as long as they are on the rock, Gibraltar will remain British. Or set sail on our award-winning dolphin boat trip to go in search of wild dolphins. The skipper and crew will share all their knowledge about dolphins. It also offers a great chance to view the rock from a different perspective. It is also possible to only book the boat trip. The boat option is available only during summer season. Modern Gibraltar is also a thriving commercial hub, with duty free prices luring bargain hunters all year round. At Selwo Marina Benalmadena you will meet cheeky sea lions, clever parrots and the star attraction, our fun-loving dolphins. You’ll be transported to the North Pole, where you’ll visit a penguinarium with a real-life igloo, reproducing the natural habitat of these fascinating seabirds in the icy cliffs of the Antarctic. And don’t forget to stop at Squirrel Monkey Forest, where an expert guide will give an educational talk on these cute primates and their way of life. Both young and old will the daily dolphin shows at Selwo Marina’s Dolphinarium. This by far our most popular attraction and you’ll be able to watch the antics of both dolphins and sea lions from a comfortable seat in our large observation terraces. After visiting the park, you’ll come to the Hondonada, a corner with exotic birds from the Amazon basin, an area known as the ‘lungs of the world’. Cross a small bridge over a stream and arrive at a specially designed play area where the children can let off steam. At midday, you can take a well-earned rest and recharge your batteries at one of park’s fine restaurants or maybe you could buy a souvenir at one of the craft shops. A perfect end to a perfect day and a must-see for animal lovers, where both young and old will enjoy an unforgettable experience. Selwo Aventura - Estepona Come face to face with the aristocrats of the animal kingdom at Selwo Aventura Theme Park and Zoo, one of Estepona’s must-sees. You’ll meet lions, tigers, rhinos, giraffes, jaguars, bears and many more animals from around the world. You can move about the park on foot or by Jeep, without disturbing the animals that are allowed to roam in semi-freedom. You will also be able to try a camel ride, show off your skills by practising archery, abseiling or crossing one of our three rope bridges. Visitors will be able to observe the park's wildlife, housed in specially recreated natural habitats, perfectly adapted to the needs of each species. Choose our Serengeti Safari option, which takes you on a 4x4 tour around the Reserve of the Lakes to get closer to chubby hippos, the extremely tall giraffes, the colourful zebras, imposing rhinos and many more. Selwo Aventura has an array of exhibits, including birds of prey, snakes, and spectacular adventure activities: rope bridges, camel rides, archery and Ziwa, the longest, fixed abseiling line in Europe. One of the latest attractions at Selwo is giraffe feeding, which gives you the opportunity to get up close to of the planet’s tallest mammal and one of its gentlest. The Bird Canyon is the largest natural aviary in Europe; you’ll be entranced by more than 1,000 specimens of beautiful birds from all over the world. The Antipodes is a new attraction specifically designed to bring visitors closer to wallabies, allowing you to interact with them. A day at Selwo is a great adventure from start to finish.


Aquavelis in Torre Del Mar Aqua Velis Water Park is situated in resort Torre del Mar (South from Velez-Malaga and 20km South-West from Nerja) on the Costa del Sol. It has over 20 different rides including an inflatable ring ride and two super-fast slides. There are also rides for younger children and two large pools (one with a wave machine) and a children’s pool. A large cafeteria caters for even the fussiest of eaters.
