Lanzarote Attractions and things to do on Lanzarote

Lanzarote (sometimes known as the “Lunar Island”) offers an insight to what it would be like to visit the moon. Its Timanfaya national park was shaped by volcanic activity and has craters, lava fields and even its own Fire Mountain where heat still radiates from a few hundred feet down. The rest of the island is rather flat and desert like and measures around 39 miles long by 13 miles wide. The capital is Arrecife which host the airport and a fishing port but offers very little else for the tourist apart from a nice beach. The best holiday resorts are in the south and include Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca. Puerto del Carmen is the largest and offers everything the holiday maker needs including a lively nightlife. It has a two-mile long stretch of golden sandy beach and on the other side of the road you can find an area called “The Strip” where all the bars, restaurants and shops can be found

Shopping

Shopping opportunities in Lanzarote are plentiful and range from local markets and handicrafts, to large shopping centers containing many popular fashion boutiques. Lanzarote's markets are often the best places to find genuine bargains and inexpensive shopping, with many markets in Lanzarote offering a good selection of gift ideas, together with tasty produce, hot snacks and local specialities. Shopping in Lanzarote begins from any time between 09:00 to 10:00, Monday to Saturday, with the majority of shops closing during the hot afternoon for a traditional Spanish siesta.

Festivals

Amongst the most popular festivals in Lanzarote, both the February carnivals and Easter Holy Week celebrations are known for their colourful parades. Other popular festivals and events in Lanzarote include the Corpus Christi festivities and Lanzarote Music Festival each June, the International Jazz Festival in July, and Lanzarote's International Kite Festival in November - which lasts for three days and attracts large crowds.

Head to the beach

Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca are the two most popular beaches for holiday makers wanting to relax, sunbathe and enjoy a wide selection of cafes and beachside bars. For anyone seeking water sports, then Puerto del Carmen is the better of the two. Costa Teguise also offers a delightful beach.

Night-life

If you are seeking night clubs, then a visit to Puerto Del Carmen is your best option. If you go to Los Playas Avenue, you will find an array of clubs and bars. If you are seeking a quieter night for a relaxing meal then you want Costa Teguiese.
