Malta Attractions and things to do in Malta

The main island of Malta, covering just 95 square miles (246 sq. km), is also a popular holiday destination because of its secluded bays and sandy beaches, washed by unpolluted clear blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Set against the backdrop of the island’s scenery and its honey-coloured stone buildings, Malta is alluring and fascinating. Malta and its little sister island, Gozo, are not stuck in a time warp, however. The islanders enjoy life to the full, and the calendar is filled with summertime ‘fiestas’ with fireworks and revelry in every little parish in honour of the village patron saints, as well as the major carnival in early spring every year. The capital, Valletta, besides offering some awesome Baroque buildings and fortifications as its main sightseeing attractions, is bustling and bursting with restaurants and cafes. The island’s compact size is also a plus for visitors; it takes no more than an hour to drive between any two points on the main island.

The Republic Street houses the most shops in Valletta. There are souvenir shops and clothes shops and other shops selling valuable articles. Daily markets are held in the Triq il-Mercanti, which is located parallel to the Republic Street. Here you can buy cheap clothes and household articles after a good haggle. In Sliema the fashionable boutiques and shops are all clustered in a small are of the island, commonly referred to as “the Ferries”. UK high street is a very popular place for shopping. Plaza shopping complex is well known for its variety. Haggling about the price of goods in Sliema is an impossible task.

Party time & festivals

Malta is well none for its carnival's and parties. As many of the fiesta's are based around the Church dates do vary from year to year so check when in resort for which week carnivals are on.

Head to the beach

The main coastal resorts and larger sandy beaches are in the northern part of Malta. Malta's most popular beaches are Mellieħa Bay, Għajn Tuffieħa and Golden Bay. For smaller, quieter beaches, try those at the tip of Malta, overlooking Gozo - Paradise Bay and Armier.

With 7,000 years of history, the sites to visit are endless - Megalithic temples, underground catacombs, churches and forts are not to be missed. There’s plenty to see and do whilst in Malta and we have listed a few ideas below. Several of these attractions can be booked at discounted rates to our customers who use our Flight & Hotel search option. Mediterraneo Marine Park The Mediterraneo Marine Park invites animal lovers to experience an innovative way of learning more about animals. See, hear and touch animals under the guidance of professional animal carers. Learn how dolphins and sea lions are trained and how the same methods can be applied to your pets at home. Situated alongside the sea, at “White Rocks” in Bahar ic-Caghaq, the Malta Marine Park succeeds in combining entertainment with education, offering guests an insight into the underwater world of dolphins & sea lions, the dexterity of tropical birds, and the laid back but alert turtles, frogs, snakes, iguanas and spiders. Whilst the Bottlenose Dolphins are undoubtedly the stars at the Malta Marine Park, and are a definite delight to visitors with their acrobatic skills, their obvious intelligence and their sense of fun, the group of South American Sea Lions are also a big hit with park guests, who are proud to demonstrate their strength, agility, humour and awareness, all blended in with an informative commentary by the animal careers. Ask questions about the animals, their diet, or the chemical-free environment that they live in, animal careers at the Marine Park will do their best to answer all your questions after the shows. Remember, Mediterraneo is far more than just entertainment, it is an experience designed to help people of all ages to learn and get closer to all these amazing animals.
