Menorca Attractions and things to do in Menorca

The Balearic Island of Menorca is an ideal destination for adult singles and couples seeking more relaxed holiday in the sun. Menorca is a picture postcard holiday destination offering a stunning coastline backed by olive covered hillsides, quaint villages and charming old town squares with their cobbled stoned markets. The main attraction is however Minorca’s sun drenched golden sand beaches which are ideal for all ages.

Menorca (also spelt Minorca) is the low-key sister island to Majorca and as with most sisters they're so different. Menorca is only 32 miles long by nine miles wide and offers a variety of beaches ranging from rocky inlets (with some pebbles and sand) to silver-sanded gently curving bays. Development has been strictly controlled and there are parts of the island - especially in the rural parts that remain untouched.

The islands capital is Mahon which has a lovely natural harbour and not so natural airport. Mahon has some upmarket hotels but its main attraction must be its cafes and restaurants that line the harbour. The capital is also the home of the world famous Minorca Gin which is still produced today using the same age-old process it has used for centuries. Moving away from Mahon this beautiful island offers some idyllic holiday resorts like the fishing village of Fornells with its wide bay that offers some great windsurfing and watersports. Other popular beach resorts include Cala Galdana, Santo Tomas and Son Bou which has a long sandy beach with a few shops, restaurants, bars and the odd discotheque.

Santo Tomas has a small number of shops that cater to the basic needs of the travellers. For broader shopping opportunities travellers can head to the neighbouring resorts. Markets are held in Es Castell on every Monday and Wednesday in the town square, where tourists can witness an array of articles. Most of the shops here are located along the high street. Travelers can head to Calas Fons for evening shopping, where visitors can shop for branded robes, pearls, designer jewelry and other delights.

Menorca has a fine tradition of fiestas (festes) that run throughout the summer, opening in Ciutadella and ending the season in Mahon. The most famous event of all is Ciutadella's fiesta in honour of Sant Joan (St John) in the third week of June. Horses are part of the rich tradition and form the focal point of this very lively event - expect to see jousting, racing and spectators attempting to touch the horses heart for luck as they rear up! Other festivals celebrating famous Saints are St Martin's Day held in Es Mercadal during the third week of July. St James's Day in Es Castell - last week of July. St Anthony's Day in Fornells – last week of July. St Christopher’s Day in Es Migjorn – end of July. St Lawrence's Day in Alaior – first weekend after 10 August. St Clement's Day in Sant Climent – 3rd week of August. St Bartholomew's Day in Ferreries - 23rd - 25th August. St Louis's Day in Sant Lluis - Last weekend of August and finally Our Lady of Grace festivities in Mahon - 7th - 8th September. Dates are as a guide only and you should check locally for the exact date as dates do change from year to year.

Head to the beach

There are two popular beaches in Menorca. They are Cala’n Forcat and Cala’n Bosch. Both offer a stunning sandy beach and have a great choice of cafes to help keep you fed and watered. The beach and the natural setting are the main attraction of Santo Tomas. Es Castell is a serene resort, located just a few kilometres away from the bustling town of Mahon in Spain. Though there is no beach in Es Castell, it can be accessible in the neighbouring resort of Cala Padera.
