Skiathos Attractions and things to do in Skiathos

With its own airport and more than 60 fine beaches, Skiathos is the most popular of the Sporades Island group and each year attracts thousands of tourists to its busy coastline. The island is only four miles (6km) wide and seven miles (11km) long. Away from the resort areas along the south and east coast it is relatively undeveloped with shady woods, olive and walnut groves and quiet beaches that can only be accessed by boat. The seafront in Skiathos Town is lined with local tavernas, cafés and some excellent seafood restaurants that look over the lively marina. The most famous beach on the island, and perhaps Greece, is Koukounaries, a one-mile (2km) long strip of fine golden sand and crystal clear water set in front of a thick pine forest.

Megali Amos houses a few small shops that cater to the basic needs of the tourists. For an extensive shopping experience travellers can head to the neighbouring bustling resort of Skiathos. Most shops in Skiathos are clustered along the Papadiamantis Street, the chief shopping street with souvenir shops, classy boutiques and gift shops. Leather goods, fancy clothes and authentic jewelry mark the best buys.

Nightlife in Megali Amos is confined to talking and dining over a glass of cold beer or other alcoholic beverages. Tourists can also walk along the beach to enjoy the calm waters under the moonlit skies. Nocturnal party animals can head to Skiathos to enjoy extensive party hours. Most of the night time venues at Skiathos are located along the Papadiamanti Street, Polytechniou Street and the Evangelistra Street. The clubs at Skiathos offer entertainments like live music shows, karaoke bars and discos, where tourists can dance to rocking music.

Head to the beach

The pristine beach of Megali Amos is bordered by golden hued sands and unevenly shaped giant rocks. Skiathos is an active beach resort located just a pebble’s throw away from Megali Amos, where tourists can look for an exhilarating holiday with pristine beaches and other attractions that are sure to enthral.

Sacred Skiathos A tour for those interested in local history, folklore and culture. The evening begins at the church of The Archangels, where you get a wonderful view and a short tour of the interesting, old church. We then continue to the Church of The Virgin Mary and after we have visited it, there is a short footpath that will take us down to the Evagelistria Monastery, built to be well hidden from pirates in a lush valley. This is the only monastery on Skiathos that is still active and it has a fascinating 200-year history, starting with the making of the first Greek flag. After a tour of the premises and the local museum, which houses a rare collection of icons, relics and traditional costumes, you will get some time on your own before departing. All in all a lovely way to spend part of your evening in peaceful and tranquil surroundings untouched and undisturbed by the modern way of life. Meeting/pick-up point: Pick-up from the coastal road and drive to the port. Start/opening time: Between 3pm and 3.30pm. End/closing time: Between 6.15pm and 6.45pm.

Island Hopper Discovery Discover some of the gems in the Sporades archipelago on this cruise. First up, you’ll sail to Skopelos. Quieter than Skiathos, its blue domed churches and whitewashed villages are everyone’s vision of Greece. Then cruise to the lush island of Alonissos, sailing through the Sporades Marine Park en-route. Don’t forget your camera, though - the scenery’s stunning. Meeting/pick-up point: Pick-up from the coastal road and drive to the port. Start/opening time: Between 9am and 9.30am. End/closing time: Between 6.15pm and 6.45pm.

Sporades Sunshine Cruise Set sail aboard the traditional fishing boat visiting some of the best beaches on the island of Skopelos. Our day starts cruising from Skiathos port on a north-easterly course for the neighbouring island of Skopelos. Light refreshments are served as we head for our first stop the beach of Kastani, where ''Mamma Mia'' was filmed in 2007. It's just a few minutes sailing to the neighbouring beach of Panormos in time for lunch (not included in the price) at one of the beach tavernas Alternatively you can enjoy sunbathing, swimming or just relax; feel free to take advantage of the snorkels provided on board. The last stop is the beautiful beach of Milia for the final dip for the day before getting back on board for the leisurely cruise back to Skiathos port. A lazy day, enjoying idyllic beaches on the neighbouring Sporadic islands. An ideal trip for all the family to places only accessible by boat, far away from the crowds and a great way to explore your holiday destination to the maximum.

Hidden Corners (Town Walk) The town walk is a perfect introduction to Skiathos town with emphasis on the old part, Plakes, rarely visited by holidaymakers. During the walk you will visit at least one local church and have the opportunity to enjoy traditional neighbourhoods where time seems to have slowed down. Our guide will tell you about everyday life on the island along with local stories from this charming capital. The walk ends at one of the oldest houses in the centre of town, where you will get the chance to sample Greek wines and local produce. The tour is not suitable for people with walking difficulties. Must wear suitable footwear. Meeting/pick-up point: Pick-up from the coastal road and drive to the port. Start/opening time: At 6pm approx. End/closing time: At 8.30pm approx.

Then, it’s on to Maria’s place – a Greek local lady who is born and lives on the island and passionate about Greek food and cooking. Learn how to make Greek dishes and then enjoy a delicious lunch in peaceful and tranquil surroundings served with wine, water and soft drinks. A truly unique experience. Meeting/pick-up point: Pick-up from the coastal road and drive to the port. Start/opening time: At 10am approx. End/closing time: At 3pm approx.
