Tenerife Attractions and things to do in Tenerife

Tenerife is the largest and busiest of the Canary Islands and measures 37 miles wide by 6o miles long. The southern part of the island is the warmest part (especially during the winter months) but the northern part is the greenest and may suit the more mature traveller. The difference in climate is mainly down to the central mountain range which is topped by the 12,000 foot Pico del Teide Mountain that even has snow on its peak even during summer. For the natural nature lover Tenerife has everything on offer from extinct volcanic craters, national parks, tropical forests, sheer cliffs, spectacular valleys and a mixture of beaches offering either black volcanic sand or golden sand that has been imported from the Sahara desert.

Shopping

The most upmarket shopping centre on the island is the Plaza Del Duque in Costa Adeje, you will however need a healthy bank balance to part with your cash here. High end fashion and jewellery are the main items on offer. The CC Meridiano is one of the newest shopping center’s to open in the capital City of Santa Cruz. This centre offers a more reasonably priced range of fashion labels and there’s plenty of places to eat and drink. The Safari Centre In the heart of Playa de Las America’s, opposite the Hard Rock Café, is everyone’s favourite south Tenerife, ‘shop and nosh’ centre where you can enjoy bars, restaurants and great shopping.

Festivals

Amongst the most popular festivals in Tenerife, are held in the Capital Santa Cruz and a smaller version in Playa de La Cruz. The gala to elect the Carnival Queen, one of the carnival’s main events, is held on the Wednesday of the first week of festivities. In this spectacular competition, all the candidates parade in all their glamorous finery on a 1,200 metre square stage wearing the most fantastic costumes, which can weigh more than a hundred kilos. Once the queen has been elected, the parade announcing the start of the Carnival takes place on the Friday: thousands of people and dozens of musical groups fill the streets for hours in a breath-taking multi-coloured chain of merrymaking and devil-may-care joie de vivre. These are held in February and March but await dates for 2017. You could check out Carnivals in Tenerife to see the latest update.

Head to the beach

The delightful island of Tenerife has plenty of sandy beaches, ranging from large popular beaches where numerous water sports are available, including windsurfing, scuba diving, fishing and boating, to small secluded beaches where visitors can just relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. The La Tejita beach in the south of Tenerife beside the Montana Roja Nature Reserve. It is a quiet, kilometre-long beach that connects by road with the tourist town of El Medano and the fishing village of Los Abrigos. On the eastern side, close to the Montana Roja the sandy beach is very popular with naturists and a perfect location for an all-over tan. Close by is the El Medano, a beach of golden sand, shallow waters and moderates wave with all the necessary services an urban beach requires.
