Holidays in Croatia
Croatia with its magnificent coastline, 1,185 islands, islets and reefs, Roman ruins and picturesque medieval villages, it is fast becoming a rival to the magical Greek islands - alluring for lovers of fun, sun, local colour, great food and a little history. The most prominent feature of Croatia's tourist industry is its Dalmatian coastline, which is indented with rocky cliffs, peninsulas and small inlets. Numerous good quality hotels and marinas have been resurrected or constructed in the past few years, and the Croatian province is once again beginning to enjoy a tourist boom reminiscent of its heyday in the 1930s. Croatia has three main coastal tourist areas - each has its own airport, Dubrovnik, Pula and Split.
Dubrovnik is incomparable holiday experience. Ideal for those who want to relax and sunbathe by the clear warm waters of the Adriatic, and if you are feeling more vigorous there is the outstanding Old Town to explore and you must take long excursions on land or sea. George Bernard Shaw baptised Dubrovnik as "the pearl of the Adriatic" because of its unsurpassed architectural inheritance. The luminous marble streets of Dubrovnik are lined with extravagant buildings punctuated by brilliantly carved Renaissance fountains and concealments. Dubrovnik's walls are the most integral and extraordinary in the Adriatic and undoubtedly head the long list of Dubrovnik's sights. This is one of the reasons, UNESCO named Dubrovnik a World Heritage Site. This island attracts adventure lovers. There is plenty to keep everyone happy who visit the Dubrovnik Riviera, be it music, theatre, galleries, dining, outdoor activities or shopping that you are after - Dubrovnik is by far the best holiday destination in Croatia.
Pula is a beautiful Croatian city and the second largest city of Istria. The ambience of the town has more of an Italian culture than Croatian culture. It is renowned for its moderate climate and unspoiled nature. Pula’s chief occupations are winemaking, ship building, fishing and tourism. It is the chief town of Croatia with its own international airport. Pula has a rich cultural history and many ancient buildings to support this stance. The streets of Pula are lined with ancient historical buildings, and the best known one is its first century Arena. Being an Adriatic coast the waters of Pula is an international summer destination.
Split is Croatia's second largest city and Adriatic's most fascinating ports with a long and exciting history. It has Diocletian's Palace, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It also has a wealth of museums and Roman ruins with a mountain backdrop and a vast expanse of sea. Besides the sightseeing in Split, the town is an excellent base for exploring the many islands like Brac, Hvar and Vis. Other easy day trips from Split include Solin, Omis, Trogir, Brela Beach, Baska Voda and Makarska, each less than an hour away by car. The local crafts, gastronomy and nightlife all make Split a great holiday destination.
